In this tutorial, Katherine, professional rope sewer, lover of sewing machines, queen of the bobbin, will take you through all you need to know about coiled rope basketry.
100% Cotton Rope: This is the signature rope used in all Mountain Thread Company baskets and kits. It is available by the yard and by the spool. This rope is manufactured in North Carolina, and is a custom braid of rope for The Mountain Thread Company.
Thread: While we stock small and large spools of 50 weight 100% cotton Aurifil thread in store, we do not currently have it available online. If you are interested in adding a spool of this high quality thread to your order, please call The Mountain Thread Company at 828-372-7024. Thread will ship for free with any additional purchase.
Heavy Duty Needles: We strongly advise the use of a heavy duty needle in your home sewing machine when you begin your own coiled rope basket projects. These are size 100/16 Denim/Jeans Needles. Available as singles or packs of five.
Kits: A kit is an excellent project starter for the sewist who’s ready to go. Each of the Mountain Thread Company kits contains the following: our 100% cotton signature rope, a heavy duty needle, step by step instructions, and illustrations for completing the project. Choose among the Rope & Fabric Coaster Kit (makes 4 coasters), the Oval Basket Kit (makes one oval organizer - a popular size!), and the Coiled Rope Basket Kit (the most open ended kit with a selection of ideas to build on).
Patterns: Brand new in 2019 - Mountain Thread Company PATTERNS! Patterns are available for instant download (choose the PDF version) or in print. Patterns are an ideal accompaniment to a spool or cut length of rope. Each pattern includes step by step instructions, detailed illustrations, tips for sewing machine settings, and ways to customize the look of the finished piece.
